Music Video Assignment

For this film, I was tasked with creating a "process" film in which I take someone through a routine. One of the most foundational parts of my life is my ballet background—I danced for 16 years—so ballet class is a routine I know like the back of my hand. This video will show you a little of what ballet class looks like: some you might expect and some that might surprise you.

"The eyes are the window to the soul." That was the prompt that inspired this video. I was to create a dynamic conversation between two people in which the eyes had significance to the story. In my fiction writing classes, we are sometimes dissuaded from focusing on the eyes as symbols as they are overused and metaphor is perhaps overattributed to them. I was faced with a dilemma: how do I focus on the eyes in a way that is visually engaging but still features two people in an enclosed space? I decided to go the fan fiction route and make an homage to one of my favorite films, Blade Runner. I distinctly remember the first time I watched it: being engaged by the tension underlying the first Voight Kampff test in the first scene, and then being entranced by the way the light glinted off Sean Young's eyes during Rachel's test. The Voight Kampff test, which determines if a replicant is indeed, a replicant, is both the title of and the inspiration behind this short film.

This video is a photomontage: a series of photos collected and linked to and to form a narrative. When coming up for the story for this video, I was very inspired by two Atlanta staples: the Plaza Theatre and Majestic Diner. I knew the neon lights would create a neon-noir effect in my pictures that I was excited to capture. The cars on the street only added to the vivid colors with their lights as they raced by. I had a great time editing these shots and experimenting with the contrast of the lights against the dark night. Funny story: we were not allowed to film in the Majestic Diner, so the "diner" the actor is sitting in in the film is actually a Steak and Shake!
